COXSACKIE VIRUS B3
Coxsackie virus B3 (CVB3) is an Enterovirus, consisting positive sense RNA as its genome with 6.56 kb long coding region flanked with 5’ and 3’ untranslated region (UTR). CVB3 is known to infect humans causing myocarditis and less commonly pancreatitis and meningitis. Upon entering the host cell viral proteins are synthesized by IRES mediated translation. CVB3 consists of type II IRES similar to polio virus. This mode of translation although independent of certain canonical factors, is dependent on specific host proteins for ribosomal recognition, translational initiation and efficient translation. These proteins are commonly known as ‘IRES trans-acting factors’ (ITAFs). Our research focuses on the understanding the structural elements in IRES RNA and identifying cellular proteins that interact with CVB3 UTR and assists translation.
